Relocating information

Relocating information by My Canberra Realestate.com has been gathered as there are a great many things to plan for on moving day, but what is often overlooked in longer moves, is packing your very own ‘survival kit’ should your belongings be lost or delayed for a time. You want this day to go as smoothly as possible and doing a little preplanning in case items get lost or misplaced can ensure that you can carry on until they turn up.

This is a checklist of common items that people need to remember to take with them in a plane or car, as they move homes:

  • ID – this isn’t just a holiday, you are moving homes, so take not only your passport and drivers license, but birth certificates and other forms of identification with you
  • The keys to your new place (if you have them already). It sounds obvious, but because you haven’t lived there before can mean this gets easily overlooked
  • Prescriptions – don’t let your health suffer, bring enough refills to last you at least a few days, keep them in marked bottles, along with a doctor’s note, if necessary (in case of stronger prescriptions)
  • Glasses/contact lenses – you may start off the day wearing contact lenses, but find your eyes get tired or dry during the day, so you want to switch to glasses. Bring both your glasses and contact lens cases and contact lens solution
  • Basic toiletries – bring enough supplies with you to last a few days.
  • Cell phones and chargers – you want to be prepared in case your cell phone battery dies on you in-transit or if your phone service isn’t yet hooked up in your new home
  • Camera and charger – you may want to take pictures of your moving day when you arrive in your new home as memories to keep or a photographic record of the move itself. This could be important for insurance purposes if anything is damaged during the move.
  • Basic tools – a hammer, screwdriver, tape, etc
  • Kitchen items – disposable utensils, plates, cups
  • Cleaning products – cleansers, cloth, dustpan, sponges, etc
  • First aid kit – bandages, pain relievers, disinfectants
  • A list of emergency contact numbers – don’t just rely on your memory!
  • A changes of clothes and pajamas
  • Toys for small children – bring a couple of favorite toys or stuffed animals to entertain the youngsters
  • Jewelry – don’t be separated from your valuable jewelry during a move. Keep these small, expensive items with you.
  • Keep some cash or travelers cheques on hand
  • Snacks such as juice boxes and granola bars/trail mix
  • Your new address!

Finding ways to minimize this stress is very important in making this transition as smooth as possible.
